eceived his training in the Roman artistic environment of the early seventeenth century, so that the study of \b \cf4 \ATXht1201 Raphael\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 Æs painting and the Venetian artists of the sixteenth century, familiarity with the work of \b \cf4 \ATXht1255 Annibale Carracci \b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 and the early sculpture of \b \cf4 \ATXht1262 Gianlorenzo Bernini\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 and his friendship with Cassiano dal Pozzo and Marcello Sacchetti, his patrons, were all important influences. He frescoed the
\i Allegory of Divine Providence\i0 on the ceiling of the Roman palace of the Barberini family, a spectacular composition based on multiple points of view and \i trompe-l'oeil\i0 , inaugurating the phenomenon known as \i cortonismo\i0 . He was one of the
leading exponents of baroque art, playing a primary role in the field of architecture as well.
